There is a great locally owned, old school burger joint in the southeast Portland area called Mike’s Drive In. It has a great 60′s diner feel to it. If you happen to be driving down HWY 224 in Milwaukie you would probably miss it as it is nestled underneath a billboard, between some tall arborvitae trees lining the expressway and the main Union Pacific train tracks that send 30 plus trains a day rumbling through the SE Harrison St crossing.
Mike’s also has another location a couple miles away in the Sellwood neighborhood and one more in Oregon City. The Milwaukie location is the one I am most familiar with because it happens to be just a block or so away from my studio. I often times forget it is even there, but I do frequent the location often for the delicious burgers and shakes.
Speaking of shakes, Mikes mixes up the shake line-up with seasonal favorites using fresh local ingredients like marionberries and strawberries in the summer and pumpkin in fall for example.
On this day, as I often do, I had my two little kids, Jordyn, 6, and Carter, 3, in tow. They love to ride their bikes from the studio over to Mike’s and get a burger and some ice cream. Often times in the summer you see many families doing the same, utilizing the bright red picnic tables outside to enjoy a meal.
The menu has a large variety of burgers, sandwiches, chicken and fish. Buffalo, Blue Cheese, Mushroom and Swiss are all different types of burgers you can order. All options are 1/4 ground chuck fresh patties and each burger variety comes served on a sesame seed bun. I ordered my usual, a bacon cheeseburger, which is made with local Tillamook cheese and Dave’s Killer Bread. The cost including fries and a drink was $7.65.
The bread is soft and the burger, while seemingly smaller than the advertised quarter pound, is really good. All of their burgers come with lettuce, tomato, pickles mayo and onions. Mike’s definitely makes one of the better burgers in town for sure.
After we ate we ordered some ice cream and rode our bikes back to the office.
