If you are hungry; dealing with parking, waitresses, complicated menus, long waits and overly fancy burgers just make things worse. Sometimes the best hamburgers come from simplicity. At Lucky Boy Burger Shop simplicity and good food is exactly what you get.
Located near the corner of East Osborn Rd and N. 16th Street, mere miles from downtown Phoenix, this stop is worth the trip. Upon arriving at Lucky Boy Burger Shop, I was put back by the small and run down appearance. I proceeded to park in one of the few available spaces near the drive up window. As I walked in I was kindly greeted by the two nice ladies behind the counter. There were only 3 tables and the hum of the refrigerator fans told me I would be eating alone. This was a little surprising considering it was just after noon on a weekday.
A quick glance of their menu revealed 4 different hamburgers (including a tri tip hamburger), grilled cheese sandwiches, hot dogs, french fries, breaded mushrooms, onion rings and a long list of malts, shakes and soda floats. This was definitely an old school 70’s throwback hamburger stop (or maybe it just hasn’t been updated since). As always, I ordered a quarter-pound hamburger with fries ($3.69) and a tall coke.
Within seconds I could hear that beautiful patty sizzling away. I was able to watch closely as my burger was prepared and the golden fries placed into a bag. Less than 4 minutes after ordering I had my lunch in hand. Granted, there really was no one else there, but judging by their efficiency, I think even a rush could be handled without any problems.
The hamburger came with a sesame-seed bun, shredded lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle, mustard and ketchup. They make their own ranch and Thousand Island dressing but I missed the tasting on these. The burger was fantastic, just how I like it. The thin patty was flavorful and cooked perfect. Often when you get thicker patties, they are overcooked, dry and lack the snap this burger provided. Halfway through the sandwich I forgot all about the lack of customers, the rundown building and basically everything else that existed outside of my table and chair.
My first impressions of Lucky Boy Burger Shop were way off. I really enjoyed the quiet friendly atmosphere while eating my delicious lunch. There were a few cars that came and went through the drive through with the same ease and care I received. I am going to have to return to try out the tri tip hamburger with homemade Thousand Island dressing and a Mexican Coke.
Don’t let the plain looking hamburger fool you, this place makes great food.

Dude you did it right. I have a standing rule when trying a new burger joint. Always order the plain burger. Don’t go for the cheeseburger. Cheese can hide bad meat. Not completely, but it does. Now, if the plain burger is great, you know the cheeseburger should be also great. After that it’s time to add bacon!
